Structures

I tried a different experiment this week. I love film, and so I thought it would be fun to use a movie as inspiration. With the pandemic going on, cabin fever and feelings of isolation are common. One of my favorite films is Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Shining. If nothing else, it is a masterfully-shot motion picture, and every frame exudes dread, loneliness, and madness. Each of the photos I selected is my take on some of the most iconic images from it. Horror is one of my favorite genres, and as I’ve gotten older, I’ve grown to especially appreciate the ones that are well-photographed and maintain a palpable sense of unease throughout. There is a very symmetrical aspect to how The Shining was shot that I tried to emulate in my own way.
All of my photos were taken on an iPhone X and edited with Adobe Lightroom. All of my filming locations were areas inside the Hubert Campus Center.

  1. I loved your discussion of how King's The Shining was an inspiration for these shots. Your editing shows a more advanced understanding of how color balance and contrast can lead to peaceful calm or unsettling dread. Normally, the bi-lateral symmetry and 1 point perspective you show us in shots 1,5 and 6 are in that former category, but your approach with these definitely make these spaces more nightmarish. The lock on the cooler door in both green and b and w are unsettling and ominous also. Well done.
